 廣泛應用于細胞生物學的各類實驗中，例如研究生長因子、細胞活素類和培養基組分，細胞毒性因子和淋巴細胞的活性。

MTT和XTT都是檢測細胞存活和生長的方法，MTT的產物為水不溶性的藍紫色結晶甲瓚（Formazan），并沉積在細胞中，需要加有機溶劑溶解，由于在去上清的操作時會有可能帶走小部分的甲瓚，故重復性略差。XTT作為線粒體脫氫酶的作用底物，被活細胞還原成水溶性的橙黃色甲臢產物，當XTT與電子偶合劑（例如PMS）聯合應用時，其所產生的水溶性的甲臢產物的吸光度與活細胞的數量成正比。

XTT優點：

1. 使用方便，省去了洗滌細胞             

2. 檢測快速
3. 靈敏度高，甚至可以測定較低細胞密度   

4. 重復性優于MTT

適用于單核細胞（Monocytes）,人肝癌細胞Hep G2胚胎纖細胞 Ehd-1, 小鼠纖維細胞，惡性黑色素瘤A375，胰腺癌BXPC-3等30余種細胞類型。
